DiamondGlow and HydraFacial are the two most-recognized "3-in-1" facial systems in the United States. Both promise the same core experience: exfoliation, extraction, and serum infusion in a single 30-60 minute treatment, no needles, no downtime, immediate glow. The branding looks similar. The marketing language overlaps. And patients are reasonably confused about which one to choose.
We get this question often at Laser Center of Marin, and we offer DiamondGlow, not HydraFacial, for a specific reason: it integrates directly with the SkinMedica professional skincare line, which is owned by Allergan. As an Allergan Platinum clinic since well before the DiamondGlow rebrand, that integration is meaningful, not cosmetic.
Here is the honest comparison.
| Factor | DiamondGlow | HydraFacial |
|---|---|---|
| Manufacturer | Allergan Aesthetics (AbbVie) | Hydrafacial Co. |
| Exfoliation method | Real diamond tip + vacuum suction | Vortex water jet + chemical solution |
| Extraction method | Vacuum suction simultaneous with exfoliation | Vortex suction with chemical loosening |
| Infusion serums | SkinMedica Pro-Infusion serums (Vitamin C+E, TNS, HA5, Lumivive, etc.) | Proprietary HydraFacial booster serums |
| Customizable to skin concern | Yes, serum chosen per patient | Yes, booster chosen per patient |
| Rewards program eligibility | Allergan Allē points | None |
| Pairs with at-home regimen | Direct SkinMedica continuity | Separate ecosystem |
| Downtime | None | None |
| Treatment time | 30-45 minutes | 30-60 minutes |
| Frequency for best results | Monthly | Monthly |
| Pain level | Painless, mild suction sensation | Painless, mild suction sensation |
Both devices deliver an excellent facial. The meaningful difference is what's in the syringe during the infusion step, and whether that ingredient continues into your daily skincare regimen at home.
DiamondGlow uses a recessed diamond tip that performs three actions simultaneously inside a closed-loop system:
The closed system is the technical innovation. Old microdermabrasion machines exfoliated and suctioned, but they didn't infuse. DiamondGlow added the infusion step into the same handpiece, so the serum lands in the optimal window, exfoliated pores, before they close.
The serum menu is where DiamondGlow earns its keep. SkinMedica's Pro-Infusion serums are formulated specifically for the device:
The same active ingredients you can continue at home in your daily SkinMedica regimen, TNS Advanced+ serum, HA5, Lytera 3.0. That's the integration that matters.
HydraFacial uses a vortex water jet instead of a diamond tip. A spiraling stream of water plus a mild chemical solution (typically a glycolic/salicylic blend) loosens debris and exfoliates the surface. Simultaneous vacuum suction extracts the loosened material. Then a proprietary booster serum is infused.
The mechanism is slightly different, water-based exfoliation rather than physical diamond abrasion, but the patient experience is comparable. Some patients prefer the "wet" feel of HydraFacial. Some prefer the "polished" feel of DiamondGlow.
Booster serums in the HydraFacial system are proprietary to HydraFacial Co. They are reasonable formulations, but they do not integrate with the major medical-grade skincare lines (SkinMedica, ZO, Obagi). The day after your HydraFacial, you go home to a different ecosystem.
This is where the choice actually becomes consequential.
SkinMedica is Allergan's medical-grade skincare line. It is one of the most clinically studied and dermatologist-recommended professional skincare brands in the United States. TNS Advanced+ (a growth-factor serum) has multiple peer-reviewed studies behind it. Lytera 3.0 is one of the most-prescribed non-prescription pigment correctors. The HA5 and Lumivive lines anchor most of our patients' home regimens.
When you have a DiamondGlow infused with TNS Advanced+ Pro-Infusion, and you go home to TNS Advanced+ serum twice daily, you are running the same molecule professionally and at home. The compounding effect is real.
When you have a HydraFacial infused with a proprietary HydraFacial booster, and you go home to whatever skincare you already use, the in-clinic and at-home regimens are disconnected.
There's also a practical rewards layer: DiamondGlow purchases and the SkinMedica products you continue at home both earn Allergan Allē points. The same points pool with your Botox, your Juvederm, your CoolSculpting. HydraFacial sits outside any rewards ecosystem.
For a long-tenured aesthetic patient, this is not a small detail. It's the difference between a portfolio of integrated treatments and a collection of one-off services.
Both devices can treat:
Both customize by serum/booster selection. The DiamondGlow customization is, in our view, more clinically meaningful because the SkinMedica serums are formulated independently for skin science, then offered through the device, not the other way around.
A common DiamondGlow protocol we run at our Corte Madera clinic:
We will sometimes split the face with two serums, one half pore-focused, one half brightening, for combination skin.
In the Bay Area, both treatments are priced in a comparable per-session band, with monthly cadence as the standard for best results.
What changes the total cost-of-care calculation:
We offer monthly DiamondGlow membership packages that bundle the facial with discounted SkinMedica retail. These are by far the most cost-effective entry point for a long-term regimen.
Both treatments give you the same immediate result: cleaner pores, smoother surface, visibly brighter skin, no downtime, makeup-ready within an hour. That's what 3-in-1 facials do.
The compounding result over 6-12 months is where the regimen choice shows up:
The treatments are similar in the chair. The trajectory diverges over the year.
Neither treatment has meaningful downtime. Some patients have:
There is no recovery period. Same-day makeup is fine. Same-day exercise is fine after a few hours.
We do recommend avoiding scheduling these on the same day as injectables or lasers, simply because the suction and exfoliation can interact with bruising or fresh laser stress.
We've been an Allergan Platinum clinic essentially since the program existed, and our deep partnership with the Allergan / SkinMedica family is the reason we chose DiamondGlow when it launched. The decision was clinical, not promotional:
HydraFacial is a fine treatment. But within our ecosystem, Allergan Platinum since 2003, SkinMedica anchored in nearly every patient's regimen, Allē rewards integrated with everything else we do, DiamondGlow is the smarter long-term choice.
No. DiamondGlow is a different device with a different mechanism (diamond tip vs. vortex water). The branding similarity is coincidental, they are competing products from different manufacturers.
Easily. There is no protocol conflict. Most patients notice a slightly different feel (more polished, less wet) and a smoother home-regimen integration once they're using SkinMedica day-to-day.
Monthly is the standard cadence and what we build into our facial membership. Every 4-6 weeks aligns with the natural skin cell turnover cycle.
The mechanical exfoliation and most SkinMedica serums are pregnancy-safe, but we modify serum selection during pregnancy and breastfeeding (no retinoids, no certain growth factors). Tell us at booking.
For most adults, yes. DiamondGlow combines what used to be three or four separate facial steps (microdermabrasion, extraction, infusion, mask) into one device with better serum delivery.
If you've been doing HydraFacials and want to step into the Allergan / SkinMedica ecosystem, or you're starting fresh and want a facial that compounds with the rest of your aesthetic plan, schedule a DiamondGlow with our team.
