IPL stands for Intense Pulsed Light. Unlike a laser, which emits a single focused wavelength, IPL emits a broad spectrum of wavelengths in each pulse. That distinction determines what the device can target in one pass.

Treated melanin oxidizes in the hours following an IPL session. The disrupted pigment coalesces into small, darkened particles that rise toward the outermost layer of the skin. These particles look and feel like flecks of pepper or coffee grounds sitting on the surface of formerly pigmented areas.

Deeper pigment and more established vascular structures may require additional exposures. Settings are calibrated at each visit based on the previous skin response. Sessions in a series are adjusted, not repeated at identical parameters.
Maintenance after a completed series typically means one session per year, combined with consistent daily sun protection. Unprotected sun exposure after the series does not erase results, but it introduces new photodamage to the same zones over time.
The window between your IPL session and the shedding of treated particles is when the skin is most photosensitive. Aftercare during this period directly determines how cleanly the result develops.
IPL is not appropriate for every patient, and a pre-treatment assessment establishes candidacy before any session is scheduled.
Recent tan or significant sun exposure raises baseline melanin across the skin surface. The device cannot reliably distinguish between the tan and the discrete lesions being targeted. This increases the risk of unintended pigmentation changes and thermal injury. Avoiding tanning for four to six weeks before treatment is standard protocol.
Fitzpatrick skin types V and VI require individualized provider evaluation before treatment. Higher baseline melanin density increases the risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation and thermal injury with standard device settings. Some patients in this range are candidates for adjusted protocols. Alternative approaches serve others better. That determination requires an in-person consultation and cannot be made when booking.
An active rosacea flare requires timing assessment. IPL is an effective long-term approach for rosacea, but treating during an active flare can temporarily worsen surface inflammation. The right time to treat is between flares, not during one.
Light-sensitizing medications, including certain antibiotics and oral retinoids, increase the skin's sensitivity to light energy. Your full medication list must be disclosed at the consultation before any treatment is scheduled.
